EMS UPDATE

- CPAP for BLS and EpiPen for BLS - September 1 has been set as the target date that the FVFD EMT's will be better equipped to save a life. Department EMT's are currently scheduled for training to provide Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) prior to the arrival of a paramedic. This procedure will ultimately save the lives of patients experiencing certain conditions that produce shortness of breath.  As far the EpiPens, the ALS providers (paramedics) have always been able to administer this life saving mediation in the presence of a true allergic reaction.  Allergic reactions are fatal approximately 1500 times per year in the US.  By equipping the BLS providers (EMT's) with epinephrine pens we will be able to step in before that condition claims the life of a patient that we respond to.

- Bariatric Unit 7-6 - For the first time in history the Fayetteville EMS will be equipping and utilizing four ambulances.  Formerly known as 7-7 and decommissioned as an ambulance the 2003 Ford Medtec is undergoing significant changes to equip it for bariatric transportation.  There is a growing need both locally and nationally for EMS units that specialize in the transportation of this population.  Pics will be posted soon of the recommissioned 7-6 and it will soon be available to meet those needs.  Once 7-6 is in service, Fayetteville will be the only local service to provide both bariatric wheelchair van and bariatric ambulance transportation needs.

- LUCAS II Devices - Over the last ten years there has been emerging research that chest compressions save lives.  The American Heart Association recommends that CPR providers push hard and push fast in order to save lives.  Physio Control answered that recommendation with the LUCAS II CPR Compression Device.  This device pushes hard and pushes fast and enables patients suffering from cardiac arrest to receive continuous high-quality compressions within seconds of EMS arriving on the scene.  Fayetteville is proud to have recently purchased four of these units and they are certain to save lives in the near future.  These devices are currently on the ambulances and paramedic unit and providers are being trained every day.  There's no time to waste when it comes to saving victims of sudden cardiac arrest.

The FVFD will continue to look for ways to improve it's delivery of service to you.  If there's something out there that will save a life, you can rest assured that the FVFD will make every effort to put that device on our apparatus.

Pictured below is a photo of one of the Lucas II Devices

that are currently on our EMS vehicles.
